On set of Resilient Luderitz a Community Vulnerabilities Documentary, Namibia 2019
JENS SCHNEIDER: Documentarist. Scriptwriter. Producer.
I am a Namibian. I am a documentarist.
Finding answers to pressing social issues, climate and environmental changes or human wildlife conflict in Namibia is a complex matter. I believe that we that live and breathe in Namibia and have our fingers on the pulse of our people’s needs are in a better position to document our own stories than a time contstrained, agenda driven film unit from another country.
The medium of video enables me to create a fluid canvas for complex stories that are clearly communicated through visual narratives based on an objective, in-depth, fact based analysis of issues at hand.
I consider capacity building for vulnerable communities through New Media as the basis of future proofing Namibia at both grass roots level and policy making sectors. Future-proofing is the process of anticipating the future and developing methods of minimizing the effects of shocks and stresses of future events. This has become the focus of my documentary work.
For those more interested in my academic and professional background, here are some markers:
Way back in the 80’s and I was one of the first video production entrepreneurs in Namibia with CTV (Communication through Video). Most of our work centred around TV and Radio ads and news coverage for foreign news producers (ITN, WTN, Finish, Swiss and Norwegian TV stations), covering the entire Namibian Independence process. With the surge of guest and hunting farms, we were then commissioned to do some hunting safari documentaries and promotional videos of the very first lodges.
As a Communication Science graduate from RAU/UJ and UNISA and as well as the Public Administration Senior Management Course (SMDP) from NIPAM and Stellenbosch University School of Public Leadership, I lectured at the University of Applied Science in Ludwigshafen, and Heilbronn, Germany. In Namibia, I had a very rewarding tenure as lecturer of Communication and Academic Writing Skills at the University of Namibia (UNAM).
After living abroad in Madagascar and Germany for some years, I was involved in building programmes for the intergration of IT into the education systems during my time at UNAM around 2006. As InWEnt/GIZ trained facilitators we successfully applied open space technology in strategic community capacity building and organisational development workshops for eLearning in Namibia, Angola, South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Senegal, Ghana, Manila, Philippines, Georgia-Caucasus. I regulary presented our ccommunity based projects at international conferences in Africa and Europe where I advocated Digital Literacies, Social Media Policies, eLearning Instructional Design, Content Development , eCommerce, eGovernment & Open Governance.
